Youngest Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa
The fourth-youngest person ever to achieve the Grandmaster title is the new hope for
Indian chess. Recently, this 14-year-old has emerged as the World under-18 champion.
In an exclusive interview with Ashish Phadnis, the Chennai lad speaks about his
journey and his best games. Excerpts:
When I was four-year-old, like many other kids, me and my elder sister Vaishali used to spend a lot of time watching television. My father tried to divert our minds and introduced Vaishali to chess.I was a naughty child and my mother would fear that I might get injured someday. But I wasn’t interested in outdoor sports and would stay at
home troubling her. So, when my father bought Vaishali a
chessboard, I immediately started liking it. Initially, I would just keep on watching her play but then I started insisting that even I want to play. That’s when our father started sending us to a nearby chess academy.
