‘When challenge becomes a passion’- Giripremi Club

Some 20 years back, there was a negative attitude towards mountaineering and trekking activities in Maharashtra. It started changing when Surendra Chavan became the first from the state to climb the Mt Everest. It was the beginning of mountaineering revolution and Giripremi Club played a major role in popularising the sport. Today, it is the only mountaineering club in India to reach summits of seven mountains over 8000mts. Umesh Zirpe, the founder of the club speaks about their goal and achievements.

How this foundation was formed? How did it develop over the years?
Giripremi Club was founded in 1982 by senior mountaineers like Ushaprabha Page, Anand Palande, Dilip Nimbalkar, Nandu Page and Shashi Hiremath. The goal was to create mountaineering culture among the youths with a slogan ‘Mountaineering for Happiness’. We received a good response from the youngsters and Giripremi has been achieving new heights and new horizons for the last four decades. Our institution has organised more than 40 expeditions in Himalaya which include the toughest peaks Mt. Everest (2012 and 2013), Mt. Lhotse (2013), Mt. Makalu (2014), Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Cho Oyu (2016), Mt. Manaslu (2017) and Mt. Kangchenjunga (2019). In Sahyadri, our climbers scaled several virgin pinnacles and rock walls like Dhakoba wall (1500 ft), Katra Kada (2700 ft), Nafta (2700 ft) and Arthur’s seat (1200 ft) etc.
