Although golf is played on manicured greens, it is really a game played between the ears –this means that mental conditioning is one of the top components of fitness in golf. Mental acuity, clarity of thought allows the golfer to prepare for and execute the shots necessary. Golfers put in countless hours of practice to develop a solid pre-shot routine and a repeatable swing which stays etched in muscle memory. No wonder then that the golf swing and stroke appear effortless and deceptively easy to a non-golfer. Golf needs a respectable level of physical fitness – muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, balance, eye coordination and cardio-respiratory endurance are all golf-related components of fitness.
