In a journey which started from a school basement, the Boosters Academy in Thane has emerged as an excellent nurturing ground for table tennis in Maharashtra. Under the guidance of Shailaja Gohad, the academy has produced eight international players, more than 50 national players and over 600 titles in the past 24 years.
What motivated you to start the academy?
My stint with table tennis started as a player. I was a national player and had participated in several inter-university tournaments and represented Maharashtra. Later on, I decided to shift my focus to academics and got graduated with a MSc in Textiles and worked as a lecturer at the SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai. One-day one of my family friends, asked me to teach their kid the basics of table tennis, as they were aware of my playing career. This was the turning point and there was no looking back. I left my job and started an academy in Thane in 1995.
