Regular and vigorous exercisers are often cautioned “don’t exercise so much, you will hurt yourself!” We also hear anecdotes of exercisers or athletes collapsing suddenly. Scary as this may seem, THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE FAR OUTWEIGH THE RISKS. In other words, you are much better off exercising than not. A well-planned and monitored exercise programme is generally safe but we need to understand that while exercising we expose the body and mind to higher levels of stress than normal. This is in accordance with the Progressive Overload Principle, which will lead to positive adaptations and improvements in fitness levels.
