The first race
Automobile racing began soon after the invention of the gasoline (petrol) fuelled internal-combustion engine in the 1880s. The first automobile competition was held in 1894 from Paris to Rouen, France, covering a distance of 80 km. The winner drove the car with an average speed of 16.4 kph. However, as per few records, the first unofficial race between two self-powered road vehicles were held in 1867 and the distance was eight miles.
