History of Golf
Origin of golf-like sport
There are several claims where the golf was originated and are much debated. Golf may be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning bat or club. A golf-like game is recorded in 1297, in Loenen aan de Vecht, where the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball. A scene from the Golf Book, circa 1540, shows a game with similarities to modern-day golf. During the time of Julius Caesar, it was played by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped tree branches. Golf was also traced back to the Song Dynasty in China during the years 960 to 1279.
