‘Getting sponsors is the biggest challenge’

Nagpur-based Dr Amit Samarth was the second Indian to finish RAAM in the solo category and became the first Asian cyclist to finish the Trans-Siberian Extreme (TSE) ultra-stage bicycle race in Russia in 2018. Talking about the challenges with Ashish Phadnis, the ultra-cyclist feels that getting sponsors was the toughest task.

You have been into several physical activities. What motivated you to indulge in so many activities?
My entire family is devoted to academics as we have almost 10 doctors in the family, so I had no other option but to focus on studies. But, when I joined college, I decided to shed some excess weight and started working out in the gym. I think it was the turning point in my life and I never looked back. Though I continued my studies and did my Masters in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, I was also working on my fitness. I won the Vidharbha Shree best physic trophy after several years of intense workout in the gym.
