Don’t resist Resistance Training

Weight, resistance or strength training has both been misunderstood and neglected. For the uninitiated and misinformed, it conjures images of impossibly large muscular exercisers pumping huge amounts of weight. Though rigorous routines are required for the highly specialised sports such as bodybuilding or weightlifting, it doesn’t apply to everyone. However, every athlete or even non-athlete, regardless of gender, needs to strength training.
Muscular strength is the muscles’ ability to overcome resistance or weight which is done by exerting a counterforce. The simple act of standing is a good example. Your back and leg muscles must resist gravitational force by applying their force. Resistance training uses the principle of progressive overload, where muscles are trained to gradually overcome greater loads or weights; in effect you can lift, pull and push more, implying your strength has increased.
