Body composition can be defined as the relative proportion of fat and fat-free
tissue in the body. Bones, muscles, internal organs (viscera) and fat are the components
which make up body weight. Out of these fat and muscle are the ones which are most talked
about in both health fitness and sports. In most cases, the aim is to increase muscle mass and
decrease the fat percentage. This is simply because muscle being a metabolically active
tissue uses up or requires calories to maintain itself whereas excess fat, besides being a dead
weight, is associated with numerous chronic diseases.
