Ask any boxing fan and they’ll tell you that Haryana and Manipur are undoubtedly India’s boxing epicentres. Talking about Haryana, several boxing prodigies has emerged over the past decade from the small town of Bhiwani in the state. Several boxers have made the country proud on the international stage too. India won five boxing medals at Melbourne Commonwealth Games, three were from Bhiwani boys, counting Akhil Kumar’s gold. Of the four who qualified for the Athens Olympics, three — Akhil, Vijender and Jitender were from Bhiwani. To sum up, Bhiwani is a ‘Little Cuba’ of India, a reference to that country’s dominance of Olympic boxing.
